How to reach MetLife Stadium during the World Cup

Getting to MetLife Stadium during the World Championships will not be as simple as choosing the most comfortable medium. The stadium is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, a few kilometers from Manhattan, but in the days of the games it will become one of the most controlled and busy points of the New York metropolitan area. For this reason, organizers have prepared a separate system compared to normal event shifts: special trains, dedicated shuttles, traffic restrictions and parking spaces moved outside the stadium area.

The most direct solution will be the NJ Transit train from Penn Station, Manhattan, to the stadium. For World Games the service will not work as in a normal day at the MetLife, when you usually pass from Secaucus Junction. Trains will be directed, but only people can use them with a ticket for the game and with a train ticket purchased in advance. The cost set by NJ Transit is 98 dollars out and back, a much higher figure than ordinary rates to reach the Meadowlands, even after the reduction compared to the initial price.

Access to the train will be regulated quite rigidly. Tickets will be purchased on the NJ Transit app, in the section dedicated to special events, and will be available up to a maximum of 40 thousand passengers per game. On the day of the meeting it will not be enough to present itself at the station: the fans will have to show both the ticket of the game and the train to receive a necessary bracelet at boarding. At Penn Station the files will be split between West 32nd Street and West 33rd Street, with routes indicated by signage to prevent thousands of people from concentric at the same point.

For those who want to spend less, the main alternative will be the official shuttles for the stadium. The service will link some collection points to New York and New Jersey, including the Port Authority Bus Terminal, Midtown East and the park-and-ride at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Clifton. Also in this case the places will be booked in advance and you will need to have a valid ticket for the game. It is a less immediate solution of the train, because it depends however on the traffic, but it should be the most accessible one for those who do not want to pay almost one hundred dollars for the railway connection.

In the days of the games traffic will also change in Manhattan. The 42nd Street will be transformed temporarily into a corridor for buses and shuttles, while on Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue dedicated lanes will be used between 42nd and 59th Street. The choice is to move the shuttles without blocking them in traffic, but it will have consequences for those who move by car, taxi or rideshare even without going to the stadium. Crossing Midtown with a private vehicle, in those hours, will probably be one of the least sensible things to do.

Driving up to MetLife will still be possible, but with many limitations. In the days of the games there will be no regular public parking spaces available: motorists will have to use external areas, especially those connected to the American Dream Mall, and buy in advance a pass that can cost several hundred dollars per vehicle. Taxis, Uber and Lyft cannot leave passengers in front of the entrances, but they will have to stop in designated areas, such as the Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment area. From there you will have to continue on foot to the gates, with security controls and waiting times to be put into account before even the kick-off.
