From October 19 a race on NYC Ferry will cost $5 dollars

From October 19 the single ticket of NYC Ferry will pass from 4,50 to 5 dollars, with an increase of about 11 percent. The board of directors of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the municipal agency responsible for the service, approved the revision of tariffs Wednesday 30 September. Until the entry into force of new prices, a race will continue to cost $4.50. The decision concerns the NYC Ferry network, which connects several districts overlooking the water in the five districts of the city.

The increase will mainly affect those who buy a ticket at a time. The ten-travel carnet will pass from 29 to 30 dollars: ten cents more per ride, against the fifty of the single ticket. Those who use the ferry to go and return from work for five days will then spend 30 dollars with the carnet, while buying separately the ten races would spend 50. According to Gothamist, the administration estimates that the new rates will bring about $2 million additional revenue per year, contributing to cover the increase in service and fuel costs.

With the carnet, the price of a route will therefore be equal to the ordinary rate of metro and local buses, today pairs to 3 dollars. The conditions, however, are different. On the MTA network you can go free from the subway to a bus, or vice versa, within two hours of payment; always using the same card or the same device, spending for these means stops at $35 in seven days. NYC Ferry has a separate ticketing system: those who descend from the ferry and continue on the subway must pay another ride. From October 19th, a journey that combines the two means will cost $8 with the single ticket of the ferry, or 6 using a race of the carnet, to the ordinary rates and before any roofs of MTA expense.

Changes between NYC Ferry lines will remain free within 120 minutes of ticket activation. The rule serves to complete a trip by taking a second ferry: it does not allow to use the same title to return. Unenabled tickets expire after 90 days of purchase, a limit to be considered before buying a carnit for occasional use.

The reduced rate will also increase from $1.45 to $1.50. The Ferry Discount Program is open to people aged 65 and over, people with disabilities and members of Fair Fares NYC, the city’s program of transport discounts for low income residents. To obtain the reduction you must apply and document the requirements: NYC Ferry indicates that verification can take up to thirty days.

A distinct program is for high school students in New York. The average extension is already operational since September 1 and includes private schools and charters. To access the student discount, a parent or guardian must recover the dedicated code in their NYC Schools Account and associate it with the NYC Ferry app, or follow the procedure to purchase paper tickets at Wall Street/Pier 11. Facilitated tickets can only be used on weekdays and registration must be renewed every year.

For those who focus on a short visit, the $15 pass is available in the app, which allows unlimited travel for 48 hours. Introduced experimentally at the end of 2025, it will become permanent without increasing price. With the new ordinary fare, it will cost as much as three single tickets: from the fourth race will therefore save compared to the separate purchase.

The increase does not concern Staten Island Ferry, the service of the great orange ferries between Whitehall, Lower Manhattan, and St. George, in Staten Island. It is managed by the City Transport Department and remains free for all, even for tourists.
