From 20 September to 4 October will be held the first edition of the NYC Pizza Week, a manifestation widespread among the independent pizzerias of the city. There will be no central place, no ticket to buy: each room will prepare a Slice Signature available only during the two weeks of the event.
The participating venues are 23: twelve in Manhattan, eight in Brooklyn and three in Queens. The organizers present the initiative as the first town celebration dedicated to independent pizzerias, although for this edition there are no locals of the Bronx and Staten Island.
The format is built around the sale of pizza to cut. To participate just consult the map of the premises, enter one of the pizzerias and order the prepared slice for the occasion. No reservations are required and there is no download app. There is no common price: every business sells its proposal according to the normal price list.
After eating, the customer can frame the QR code displayed on the counter. The system prepares an SMS with the word PIZZA, asks for the identification code of the local and allows to assign a score between 1 and 5, also using decimals. The voting regulation allows a judgement per day for each pizzeria, but does not limit the number of premises a person can assess. At the end of the event, the slice with the highest score will receive the title of Best Slice of NYC Pizza Week.
The proposals show how the definition of New York slice has expanded in recent years. Next to mozzarella, ricotta, mortadella and suppressed appear pork to the pasteur, shawarma chicken, Oaxaca cheese, cucumbers, calabrese ranch sauce, tater tots and spicy honey.
Andrea’s Pizza, in East Village, will prepare a slice with mozzarella, mortadella, burrata and pistachio. Hots Pizza, in Two Bridges, will propose the Pickle Pizza, with crème fraîche, mozzarella, spicy pickles, aneto, Parmesan and a ranch sauce with Calabrian chili. Pizza Loves Sauce, on the Lower East Side, will serve a slice with chicken shawarma, garlic sauce, pickled cucumbers and fresh mozzarella.
In Brooklyn, Stretch Pizza will take Domino Park the Al Pastor, with braised pork, green sauce, pineapple ricotta and coriander. Paulie Gee’s from Greenpoint will prepare a square pizza with provolone, sausage, spinach and red peppers. Roebling Pizza will serve the Detroit de Chilorio, with chillied pork, Oaxaca cheese and árbol sauce. Angelo’s Pizza di Flatbush instead chose pumpkin flowers, mozzarella, Oaxaca cheese and crispy chicharrón.
In Queens, Mattarello Pizzeria in Ridgewood will propose the Roman Holiday, with roasted potatoes and homemade pork. Jax Pizza Joint from Long Island City will serve Spicy Juan, with pepperoni, vodka sauce, Calabrian chili oil and seasoned Parmesan. Also on Long Island City, Traze Pizza will prepare the Dolly, a combination of mozzarella, ground meat in mushroom cream, potato croquettes and cheddar.
The Italian component is particularly evident in pizzerias working with Roman dough and formats. Unregular Pizza, founded by the Roman Gabriele Lamonaca with pizzaiolo Salvatore Gagliardo, will participate both in the headquarters of Union Square and in that of the Essex Market. His Crunchy B will have tomato, mozzarella, burrata, parmesan and a crispy spicy oil prepared in the house.
Impasto will be present in the two premises of Clinton Hill and Park Slope with Mushrooms and Black Truffle: mushroom cream, sauteed shiitakes, truffle buffalo ricotta, parsley and garlic oil. The pizzeria, founded by Luca Pelliccioni and developed together with Roberto Aita and Jacopo Rigolio, specializes in Roman pizza in baking tray. Also Mattarello, open by Fabrizio Fragola, uses a high hydration mixture left to ferment between 24 and 72 hours.
The complete list of slices also includes Aria Nova, Cellos Pizzeria, Frico on 2nd, LTD Pizza, Marko’s Pizzeria, Paulie Gee’s East Village, Slicehaus, Diamond Slice and Rome to Brooklyn. To date, September 16, Frico on 2nd and Paulie Gee’s in East Village have not yet been communicated on the official website.
The idea was developed by Andrew Young after two years of monthly pizza crawl organized in different neighborhoods, according to Time Out. The passage from a group visit to a two-week event allows to distribute the public among the premises, leaving the counters and the rooms of the pizzerias to host the event.
For each Slice Signature sold, up to a maximum of 250 slices for each venue, the organization will make a donation to Slice Out Hunger, an association born in New York and committed against food insecurity. The Pizza Week website does not indicate the amount paid for each sale. Slice Out Hunger claims to have collected more than two million dollars from 2009 for food programs and emergency interventions in the United States.
The vote will be closed on 4 October.
