On Thursday, September 10, at the Italian Institute of Culture in New York, a meeting was held to commemorate the attacks of 11 September 2001, twenty-five years away. The evening, opened by the director Claudio Pagliara, brought together journalists, survivors and family members of the victims.
During the meeting, an excerpt of a documentary was screened for the TG1 on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary, edited by the cameraman and editor Rocco Contini. In the video, Robert La Pietra, present in the room and that at the moment of the impact was on the 16th floor of the North Tower, told the evacuation and the encounter on the stairs with the firefighters, who climbed while he was trying to get out. Joe Stolzer, actor and survivor present in the room, spoke instead of the consequences of exposure to dusts of Ground Zero and battles to obtain recognition of diseases and health care at life.
The journalists Maria Teresa Cometto and Glauco Maggi presented Da Giuliani to Mamdani their book dedicated to New York and retraced the day of the attacks, when they lived in Battery Park, near the World Trade Center. They told how, after the initial unbelief, they understood that it was a terrorist attack, and explained the choice of staying in the city through the bond with people and the solidarity experienced in those days.
Giulio Piccoli also intervened at the evening, who lost a son in the attacks and collected the names and stories of Italian and Italian victims. Pagliara also talked about how New York has changed over the last twenty-five years, with the growth of the technology sector alongside the financial sector. The reconstruction of the World Trade Center area has brought new buildings, parks and cultural spaces to the sites of the attacks, from an almost exclusive dependence on Wall Street to a flourishing technological ecosystem that today has about 9,000 startups, rivaling the Silicon Valley.
The meeting ended with a prayer and a call to the need to tell on September 11 even to the generations who did not live it.
