New York is preparing a network of safe bike parking spaces: it is news, in a city that has many small apartments, buildings with narrow stairs very narrow and a rate of still high theft. The Department of Transportation of the City, NYC DOT, has started the process to decide where to install 500 new structures in the five boroughs, asking residents to indicate online the areas in which they serve more. The program was announced in 2024, but now it enters a more concrete phase: the installation should begin by the end of the year, although a new date for the completion of the entire network was not indicated.
I mean, in New York, many people use bikes, but they don’t always have a place to leave. According to the DOT, the lack of domestic spaces to store it, especially in the case of e-bike and cargo bike, is one of the main obstacles to the choice of buying one or using it every day. Transportation Alternatives, one of the main city associations dealing with mobility, says that the absence of safe parking is the second reason why many New Yorkers give up their bike, after the fear of not feeling safe enough on the road.
The new structures will not all be the same. The floor includes small closed boxes for standard bicycles, more suitable structures for cargo bikes and adapted bicycles, larger hubs in areas with large pavements, squares or spaces under the elevated infrastructures, and self-locking dock that will also include charging points for electric micromobility. They will be available through paid subscriptions, both short and for more continuous use, and with discounted rates for low income residents.
The portal opened by the DOT also serves to understand what kind of question exists in the different neighborhoods. Participants can indicate where they would like to find a parking space, which means they use – traditional bikes, e-bikes, cargo bikes or adaptive bikes (bicycles change to meet different needs, like some disability) – and how long it would need to leave it there: a few hours, a night, a weekend or longer periods. Additional services can also be reported, such as charging for batteries, pumps for tires or small repair stations. It is an important part of the project, because the risk, in such initiatives, is to install structures where they are easier to put, but not where they serve more.
Along with the parking program, the DOT also published the new 2026 cycle map in New York. For the first time it is available in interactive online version and allows you to see protected cycle paths, conventional lanes, greenway, bike boulevard, links between routes, Citi Bike stations, bike shops and rental points. The paper version is available free of charge in libraries, bike shops and community centres.
