Pirelli will invest $1.2 billion in his factory in Georgia

Pirelli has announced an investment of approximately 1,2 billion dollars, equal to one billion euros, to expand the establishment of Rome, in the northwest of Georgia. The plan, presented on Tuesday, September 22 by the company and Governor Brian Kemp, provides about a thousand new jobs. Most assumptions will begin in 2029, while the completion of the expansion is planned for 2033.

For the factory will be a considerable change in size. According to data published by the administration of Rome, the production will pass from the current 450 thousand tires a year to about 6 million: over thirteen times so. Pirelli has been present in Georgia since 2002, when he set up the factory and the US headquarters. Today it employs 234 people, distributed between production, innovation and offices: the thousand places announced will be additional.

The investment will start in 2027 and proceed on two fronts. The first concerns the expansion of robotic production, with a technology developed by Pirelli called MIRS: modular systems that allow to manufacture high-tech tyres. The capacity will begin to grow in 2028 and will reach 3 million pieces a year. This will add a plant based on a traditional production process, but completely automated, capable of creating another 3 million tires. According to the authorities of Georgia, this second part of the project will require more recruitment.

The choice to increase American production depends mainly on the market to which Pirelli wants to sell: for the company, the United States represents about 40 percent of the world volumes of the “High Value” segment, that of high-end tyres and with more advanced technological features. The goal is to produce in the United States a greater share of the tires destined to American customers, approaching manufacturing to the sales market.

Cyber Tyre technology will also be produced in Rome, which uses sensors inserted in the tires to collect data such as pressure, temperature and acceleration. A software processes them and transmits them to the electronics of the car: the information can be used by systems that control the braking and stability of the vehicle. The expansion also covers tyres designed to exchange data with the car while driving.

The government of Georgia has linked the agreement to the economic mission in Italy carried out in 2024 by Kemp and his wife Marty, during which they had met the leaders of Pirelli. The project collaborates with the state agency for economic development, the development authority of Rome and the County of Floyd, the professional training program Georgia Quick Start and the electricity company Georgia Power.

The administration of Rome indicates for the new employment an annual average wage of $56.987, with the factory that plans to achieve full operation in 2033, seven years after the announcement.
