Donald Trump will meet today Zohran Mamdani in Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the mayor of New York on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It will be the third interview in person between the two, but the first in the city: in the two previous appointments Mamdani had gone to Washington, the White House.
The meeting is scheduled for this afternoon and will take place closed doors. The White House confirmed the date without adding details; Anna Bahr, director of Mamdani’s communication, told the Associated Press that the two will talk about “questions concerning the city and New Yorkers”. A more precise agenda has not yet been spread.
Trump will be in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, the week when the city hosts presidents, prime ministers and diplomatic delegations. The appointment with Mamdani is then included in a visit already marked by a dense program and exceptional security measures around the Glass Palace and along the main streets of Manhattan.
The first meeting between Trump and Mamdani was held on 21 November 2025, a few weeks after the election of the mayor and before his settlement. Mamdani had reached the Oval Studio by mayor-elect. The interview had been described as friendly and Trump had said that the new mayor could surprise «some conservatives».
The two had re-lived in February. On that occasion Mamdani had given the president a fake first page of the New York Daily News with the title “Trump to City: Let’s Build”. It was an overthrown call to the famous first page of 1975, “Ford to City: Drop Dead”, published after President Gerald Ford announced his intention to oppose new federal financial aid for New York. The mayor’s assistants explained that the gesture was to show the effect that new federal investments in housing could have on the city.
Today the institutional context is different especially for the place. The mayor will not go to the seat of the federal presidency: Trump will arrive in the mayor’s residence, which for the first time will host their meeting. It is a formal detail, but it makes visible the passage from two visits to Washington to an interview in the city that both administer, from different levels.
Gracie Mansion is located in Carl Schurz Park, overlooking the East River at the height of the 88th street. The building, built at the end of the eighteenth century, has been used since 1942 as the official residence of the mayors of New York and also as the seat of receptions and meetings of representation. During the UN week, when international diplomacy physically crosses Manhattan, that function is particularly evident.
The most concrete fact, before the meeting, is that between City Hall and White House there is a direct channel. Housing has already entered the February conversation; for the rest it is not known what issues will be addressed today. The themes that depend partly on Washington and partly on the city are many.
