What to do in New York in April between exhibitions, markets and great events

In April, parks, streets, markets and cultural institutions of New York re-activate the programming of events – free and paid -, commercial initiatives and great artistic appointments. It is part of the seasonality of the tourist calendar, which makes the month of April one of the most dense for participation and variety of the offer.

In fact, outdoor markets return, starting from Smorgasburg, considered the largest weekly food market in the United States. Born in 2011 as an extension of the Brooklyn Flea, today it involves over 70 sellers between Marsha P. Johnson State Park and Prospect Park, with a proposal that reflects the multicultural composition of the city. The 2026 edition introduces new international kitchens while maintaining price accessibility.

April also coincides with some of the main exhibitions of the season. The Whitney Biennial 2026, housed at the Whitney Museum of American Art, is a fundamental stage for American contemporary art and the 2026 edition brings together 56 artists and focuses on artificial intelligence, the relationships between species and belief systems, especially through immersive installations and sound environments, a recent trend imported directly from the Biennale.

The exhibition “Inspired by MetroCard”, set up at the Grand Central Terminal with the support of the New York Transit Museum, uses the historic transport card – introduced in the nineties and gradually replaced by contactless systems – as an artistic material. The works include mosaics, sculptures and wearable objects made from abandoned cards, transforming a daily object into an element of urban memory.

The Orchid Show 2026 at the New York Botanical Garden closes on 26 April with an exhibition that reinterprets the aesthetics of the city through floral installations inspired by metros and pizzerias. In parallel, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden houses the Hanami Nights, evening events related to cherry blossoming, a tradition of Japanese origin that in recent years has assumed an increasingly international dimension even in the United States.

The Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival, which takes place on Fifth Avenue on Easter Sunday. Here participants parade with hats decorated in a often elaborate way. Documented in the second half of the nineteenth century, the event has become an example of spontaneous urban rituality, closer to a street party.

And then there are cheap gastronomic events, such as Queens Night Market in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The market, born in 2015, is characterized by the price limit imposed on the stands (traditionally around $5-6), a choice designed to keep the offer accessible and promote the participation of local communities. The initial phase of the season includes paid evenings to manage influx, with part of revenues destined to beneficial activities.

On the level of entertainment, Candlelight concerts, organized by the Fever platform, offer classical reinterpretations of pop and soul repertoires in historical architectural contexts, while many venues – such as The Cutting Room – host performances that focus on acoustic arrangements and cast from Broadway.

This year the Macy’s Flower Show will be back, at the 51st edition, at the flagship store in Herald Square. The floral arrangement attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
