In New York Ferragosto you can walk in the middle of Park Avenue. Tomorrow, Saturday, August 15, Summer Streets returns, the initiative with which for some summer days the city subtracts from traffic a long road corridor and leaves it to pedestrians, bicycles and outdoor activities.
Tomorrow will be the third and final day of the 2026 edition in Manhattan. From 7 am to 15 pm you can travel without normal car traffic a route that starts from the Brooklyn Bridge and arrives to Dyckman Street, in Inwood, in the northern part of the island.
The route indicated by the Department of Transportation goes back to Manhattan along Lafayette Street and Park Avenue until 110th Street. From there it crosses west and continues on Broadway to Dyckman Street. It does not mean that the entire Manhattan will be closed to cars: Summer Streets creates a long axis without traffic that crosses Downtown, Midtown, Harlem, Washington Heights and arrives to Inwood.
It is not necessary to walk it all. You can enter and exit freely along the way, on foot or by bicycle, and you do not need tickets or recordings. The event is free of charge.
Along the way there will be various rest areas with sports, music, installations and family initiatives. One of the main is on 40th Street and Park Avenue, near Grand Central, where outdoor games and refreshments are provided. Other rest stops are distributed along the route, including East Harlem, the 125th Street, Washington Heights and Dyckman Street.
Summer Streets is not just a temporary cycle path. The DOT programme includes free activities, performances, sports initiatives and artistic installations. This year the department has also collaborated with the New York Road Runners to organize free events dedicated to racing and walking.
For those who do not participate, the most important aspect is traffic. The roads included in the route are closed to normal circulation during the event and there are also restrictions for stopping. However, the crossroads are not all blocked: in different points traffic can cross the path under the control of agents, to avoid splitting Manhattan in two for eight hours. The DOT publishes directions on road closures and restrictions on parking, which can also be changed by the police according to the conditions of the day.
Summer Streets’ 2026 edition involves all five boroughs. After Queens and Staten Island on 25 July and the three days of Manhattan on 1, 8 and 15 August, the event will end on Saturday 22 August with the last two appointments in Brooklyn and the Bronx.
