With the arrival of spring, New York enters one of the most suggestive phases of the year: that of cherry blossoming, a short but very followed phenomenon, which every year attracts residents and tourists to different points of the city. The most famous concentration remains that of Central Park, but in recent years other areas have been established, such as Roosevelt Island and the Brooklyn River, while outside the city the Branch Brook Park, in Newark, has become a reference for quantity of trees, with over 5,000 specimens, more than those present in Washington, making it the largest cherry park in America.
But the ways to watch cherry blossoming can be many and very different from each other. Among the less conventional are those who use the Roosevelt Island Tramway, the cable car line inaugurated in 1976 as a temporary solution to connect Manhattan to Roosevelt Island and then maintained as an infrastructure of the urban transport system. Today it is integrated into the Metro Transportation Authority (MTA) network and uses the same metro rates, making it one of the city’s most accessible sights.
The journey, which lasts about five minutes, connects the 60th road and Second Avenue with Roosevelt Island, running parallel to Queensboro Bridge and reaching a height of about 75 meters. From this altitude, the perception of flowering changes: the trees are no longer isolated elements along a pedestrian path, but a continuous mass that follows the profile of the island, visible as a compact band along the East River. It is a perspective that returns the scale of the phenomenon, hardly perceptible from the ground.
The flowering calendar varies every year also according to climate conditions, but follows a relatively stable pattern. The Yoshino varieties, characterized by light flowers between white and pale pink, generally reach the peak between late March and early April. The Kwanzan, with denser blooms and bright pink colour, arrive shortly after, between mid and late April. The forecasts for 2026, based on local seasonal monitoring, indicate a maximum flowering period between the end of March and mid-April, in line with the historical averages of the region.

From a geographical point of view, the most visible stretch from the cable car is the southern part of Roosevelt Island. In particular, the West Promenade concentrates the so-called “Cherry Tree Walk”, a path overlooking the water where the trees are arranged in continuous sequence. Further south, the Cornell Tech campus area hosts more recent plantations, integrated into the contemporary architectural project. The downhill phase of the cabin, in the last seconds of the journey, is the one that offers the closest distance to the chiome.
Once you arrive on the island experience changes radically and from the view from above you go to a direct crossing, with paths that develop under the chiome and along the river.
