For years he has been one of the most complicated and dangerous knots in Brooklyn. Today, however, Grand Army Plaza is preparing to change face, turning into a modern public space, accessible and finally thought for people.
The heart of the project is the monumental entrance of Prospect Park, often referred to as the “British courtyard”. A place loved by residents, but paradoxically difficult to reach because of a system of roads and crossroads that over the years has become a real urban maze.
The plan aims to restore centrality to two symbols of the area: the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch and the Bailey Fountain, today separated from the park by busy carriages and complex crossings.
The goal is simple and ambitious: to create a direct and smooth connection between these elements and the park, eliminating barriers and making the space more intuitive and safe.
For decades, moving in this area has meant caring, bus, bicycles and thousands of pedestrians. The new project completely reverses this logic.
The priorities are clear:

Public transport will also benefit from the transformation: the bus lines most used, often blocked in the traffic of the square, can move more efficiently.

This is why the city started a participatory journey, inviting citizens to contribute with ideas and observations, both through live and online meetings.
Among the promoters of the initiative is the mayor Zohran Mamdani, along with the City Transport Department, which is now entering the final stage of design.
The ambition goes beyond the simple reorganization of traffic. The idea is to create a real urban square: a place to stop, meet, live the city.
Recovering space from cars, New York City aims to bring this entry back to its original function: not only a point of passage, but a destination.
If the project is planned, Grand Army Plaza could become one of the most representative public spaces in Brooklyn, a symbol of how cities can evolve by focusing people.
