Next July 4, in New York, Macy’s fireworks will have a bigger shape than usual. The 2026 edition will be the fiftieth of the show organized by the chain of department stores and will fall in the same year of the 250th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the United States. For this reason Macy’s has announced a more extensive version of the event, designed to involve both New York and New Jersey, not only a part of the waterfront as usual.
The main novelty concerns the places from which the fires will leave. The show will use the Brooklyn Bridge, which will be one of the central points of the exhibition, the lower section of the East River near the Seaport District and the Lower Hudson River, in collaboration with Jersey City. It is a choice not only scenic but also practical: distributing the show on multiple areas means making it visible from multiple points of the city and on the other side of the river, after years when the placement of fires — East River or Hudson River — has often favored some neighborhoods and excluded others.
The show will be Saturday 4 July 2026. The television broadcast will begin at 20 on the east coast, on NBC and Peacock, while the real fires are scheduled later, when it will be dark. Macy’s speaks of a national celebration also broadcast in replication on NBC at 22 and simulcasts in Spanish on Telemundo. The useful data, for those who will be in the city, is that the pyrotechnic part should last about 25 minutes: little enough to make decisive the choice of the observation point, especially in an evening in which the accesses to the waterfront will be controlled and crowded.
The official areas for the public have not yet been communicated. However, it is already clear that the most interested areas will be those with free views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Seaport, Lower East River and the nearest side of the Hudson to Jersey City. Brooklyn Bridge Park, DUMBO, South Street Seaport and the waterfront of Jersey City will probably be among the most sought-after places, but it is advisable to distinguish between “intuitive” points and authorized points: for events of this scale, the difference will make the city maps, pedestrian gates and road closures that will be published later.
Inside the campaign “Celebrations Start at Macy’s” there is also a competition, called Golden Confetti Sweepstakes, open until 31 October 2026. Macy’s puts in place a hundred prizes, including tickets for its main events, live experiences and products, while a winner will receive a $100,000 prize in shopping. It is the most commercial part of the operation, but it also tells the sense of the announcement: Macy’s is treating 2026 as a year of anniversaries, connecting the fires of July 4 to the hundredth edition of Thanksgiving Day Parade, scheduled in the same year.
